Training Update & Chiropractor Care

This is a much delayed and much needed training update!

The problem:

Just in case you haven’t been following along for a while, I have been having off and on pain in my right leg. I thought it was shin splints, then tight calves, then maybe my Achilles. Really pin pointing the source of the pain was becoming a guessing game. Anything over four miles and anything faster than 8min pace seemed to bring on the fatigue. I knew my training plan was good, and I was definitely not over training based on heart rate and other biometrics.

Getting Help!

I decided I needed to seek some help. In the past I haven’t had good luck with orthopedic doctors and I knew I didn’t want to take any medications or get any injections if I could avoid it. With that decided, I made the decision to try out a chiropractor clinic. I have been to two different chiropractors in the past. Once in high school and that is what kept me healthy and being able to run in college. After a car accident in 2017 I went to a bunch of doctors and finally landed on a chiropractor, that was just an okay experience.

This time I found one in my area that is a biomechanics chiropractor. I was pretty much sold from the moment they said they don’t guess they use science. Within my first two appointments I had two rounds of x-rays. Off to a good start by be.

It was found that I still had some lingering whiplash injuries from a car accident I was in back in 2017, and I also have some disc degeneration in my lower back. I really went back and forth on if I wanted to put in the time and effort, or if I just wanted to hang up my running shoes and move on with my life.

Moving forward!

I decided a few days ago that I have unfinished business with running and I’m going to move forward with their suggested treatment plan

It will be 44 treatments over 6 months. With exercises at home. I’m excited to see the progress along the way.

The doctor recommended that I lower my mileage to no more than 2-3 miles at any given time during the beginning of treatment. I will probably do two a days a couple days a week, just to keep my fitness up. Next week we are going to figure out what is safe strength training wise.

I am hopefully of this treatment plan, and I believe in the process. My plan is to go all in as perfectly as I possibly can and see if it improves not only my running but overall quality of life.

Have you ever seen a chiropractor? What was your experience?
