Running Safety: 10 Tips To Keep You Safe
Running Safety is beyond important, and often times overlooked. This post was inspired by the ESPN article that was recently published about professional runner Emily Infeld. If you haven’t read it yet, I would recommend it. You can find the article here.
Running safety is often times forgotten about or not something you think about until an incident happens to you or someone you are close to. It is the mindset of “this would never happen to me.” That mindset can land you in trouble.
It is more important that ever to make sure you are doing everything you can to keep yourself save while running. The world is currently a scary place and incidents are usually unpredictable or happen when you are either naive or are to comfortable.
This is not meant to be scary. Running should still be fun and a way to relieve stress and help your body both physically and mentally. Use this as a reminder that it is also important to proactively keep yourself safe in the process.
10 Tips to Staying Safe While Running – Running Safety
- Vary your Routine: Make sure your running isn’t predictable. Change up the time or location often.
- Run with a Buddy: Running with someone else, or as part of a group, is the safest.
- Bring your Phone: Your phone is one of the most powerful safety options you have. Use it to your advantage. Download a secure app to track your location. Share your location with a family member or friend. Call someone if you feel like someone might be following you.
- Carry ID: If something happens, it is beyond important to have ID on you. I personally invested in a ROAD ID which is a wearable form of ID.
- Be Smart About Headphones: I run with one head phone in on very low volume. I am still able to benefit from the music or podcast with still hearing my surroundings. Shokz headphones are another great option. They are headphones that don’t sit in your ears, allowing you to hear your music and surroundings.
- Run in Daylight: Or if you have to run in the dark make yourself overly visible. It is less likely for bad incidents to happen during the daytime hours.
- Run in Populated Areas: As mentioned above it is less likely for harmful incidents to happen if you are in well populated area.
- Carry a Self Defense Tool: This can help you feel safer. BUT make sure you know how to use it (and if you are using pepper spray make sure it is not expired). Often times weapons of any kind can be used against you if you are not properly prepared and trained. Find a GREAT option HERE (affiliate link)
- Use GPS Tracking: or let someone know when and where you are running. My Garmin watch allows me to use this feature and alert someone if needed. You can see if your watch allows this or an app on your phone. *Make sure the app is secure.
- Be Careful About Social Media: Be vague when posting normal routes on social media. Post after you have already completed your run. As mentioned above vary your routine if you post often about your location on social media.
Happy Running!
