Determine your WHY. Why do you want to run, what is your goal? You will come back to this often as a source of discipline and motivation! (Examples: Healthy lifestyle, keeping up with my kids, time to myself, self-care, accomplish a goal etc).
Determine where your starting point is. Be realistic! Now is not the time to overreach. If you are starting with zero exercise. Start with walking. If you are comfortable walking at least a mile. Start with a Run/Walk program and build slowly!
Find some Shoes! Make sure you have proper fitting running shoes to help avoid injuries. If possible, go to your local running store and be fitted for shoes. With that said! You can start with what you have. If you are starting with the run/walk method any tennis shoes will work until you are a little future into your running journey! Don’t let expensive running shoes stop you from starting!
Make sure you Warm-Up and Cool-Down. Even if you don’t think you are doing anything ‘special’ or significant. Anything out of the ordinary for your body is significant!
Follow a plan! If you want to make progress a plan is important. It will allow you to progress forward with the right amount of work and rest.
Don’t forget rest days! Rest days are some of the most important days in your training plan. Don’t skip them. Your body needs to recover to keep progressing forward.
HAVE FUN! Keep things fun. Don’t overthink it and don’t put too much pressure on yourself.
